The Miniature American Shepherd originated in the United States during the 1960s, developed from smaller Australian Shepherds. These dogs were selectively bred to keep their smaller size while preserving their intelligence, drive and character. Their active, fun, and loyal personalities quickly made them a favourite amongst dog lovers.

The breed was officially recognised by the Australian National Kennel Council in 2022.
